Careers in Medicine
Welcome to this special edition of The Yale Journal for Humanities in Medicine.
This issue was dedicated to those college students who
were considering medical school but who were not sure of what they wanted to
do. Here you will find some advice in excerpts from some of the essays from
A Yale Guide
to Careers in Medicine and the Health Professions, edited by Robert Donaldson, M.D.,
Kathleen Lundgren, M.Div., and Howard Spiro, M.D. The book gives the opinions of a variety of enthusiastic experts, and here you will find portions of the essays. Please note
that the essays have been abridged by the editors and have not been
reviewed by the authors.
Here you can read the opinions of a Dean of Admissions to medical
school, a college adviser for premeds, college students
themselves , the experiences of interns and residents and postgraduate
students as well as young and old faculty. From that you can get an
idea of the varied preparations that people in different positions
suggest. The book's complete table of contents is also available here.
We want your opinion of what we have selected as representative
portions of the essays. We would very much appreciate your
sending us frank comments to let us know what you think is
good and what you think is bad and what more you would like to read.
